About this episode
Joining me on the podcast today is the one and only Robert Kiyosaki, the author of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," the most popular real estate investing book, and the number one personal finance book of all time. The book is sold in many languages and countries around the world. Robert is also a fellow military veteran. I had an instant connection with Robert the moment I read through the concepts in his book, and it totally opened up my eyes to the real estate investing world. The same is true with the majority of the last 100 guests that I've had on this podcast who pointed to "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" as the impetus for getting started. In this episode, Robert shares his journey from serving the military to becoming a prominent real estate investor and author. Robert also offers his perspective on the current real estate market and where things are heading. So, if you want to amp up your own rental property investing, this episode is for you!

03What is it about this book that you know there's tens of thousands of business and finance books out there but this is the number one personal finance book out there and this is the one that everyone points to and maybe the most impactful thing to happen to real estate investing when you think about the lives that have been changed so what is it about this book that has had that that that you think has created that impact well when you figure that out let me know you had 2 years to think about it I really don't know I it's to me was just the contrast between my poor dad a PhD and my rich dad who never went to school and we we've all seen that you know we've all seen the differences you know why why is a guy like let's say
52Zerber he dropped out of school jobs dropped out of school why do so many entrepreneurs drop out of school do you know and then why are so many young people leaving school today deep in financial debt or the worst type of debt possible a college loan and they can't find a job or they or they it doesn't fulfill them so I really don't know the book is number 20 on Amazon out of all the millions of books is 20 after 25 years so I don't know I just I just taught what my that Tau me yeah and I I had when I came back from Vietnam that was kind of the you know I don't what you call it the decision point
41And I was a pilot for the Marine Corps all my Marine friends want to fly for the Airlines and it sounds glamorous you know oh you're gonna fly for United or Hawaiian and all this stuff but that was true I was really through and my rich said well you go fly for the airlines and get your PhD and somehow it just didn't ring true after coming back from Vietnam if you if you you know did you did you serve in combat never in combat I was I was in the Pacific mostly so so if if I could explain something which is reason I was very happy to talk to you is that I take a great risk I took a great risk writing Rich Dad M because you know I
30Said in there your house is not an asset Savers are losers you know I basically flipped the bird at the establishment and New York Times everybody trashed me yeah but as a military officer you know if you you can't stand the heat get out of the service so I come back from Vietnam and I'm going Jesus and then I I made all my money I was financially free and I said I've got to do something so again it goes back to to Mission you know the first the first word I learned at at Kings white was the mission it's very spiritual organization the military academies and I FY I took King's Point because I really did want to go to see you know when I was 14 years old my only a I got in school was wood
20Shop I was flanking out of everything else but I got a in wood shop because I wanted to sail the world and so I built an eloro class sales sailboat and I'm sailing around the water going gee I really want to go to seea and then for some reason I read the book carry on Mr bow you know how books influence your life and carry on Mr bage was about a young guy I think from man then Tucket during the Wailing days and he went to see and he wrote a book called The bodish Practical Navigator so that was like in the 1800s so here I am 1965 I'm FS all over the place because I can't write it's not that I couldn't write
08The teachers didn't like what I was writing you I so why am I wasting my time reading Little Women or something whatever am I doing I want to learn about money and so they got an F for that but I go to King's Point in New York I got a professional at Naval Academy and merch Academy and sitting there like this looking at the twoy Naval Academy was paying $200 a month as an endom and Kings Point was paying 2,000 a month as a I said well I flucked out of math but I can't count zeros no brainer yeah so I took King but that wasn't why I took King's Point I really wanted to go to Sea I wanted to be a merchant Sean you know I saw Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando and all
57That and he sailed into Tahiti you had tahan maidens paddling out the boat with nothing on but flower lays I said that's you know so when I was in high school the 60s my guidance counselor thought there was no hope for me because I'm I'm an F student I was a surfer and she says what do you want to do with your wife and I said I said I want to sail to the heiti drink beer and chase women and she said you don't have very high ambition do you I said well it's all relative so that's kind of the path I built a boat did all this stuff and I'm I'm at Kings Point and the first building I walk into is bage Hall I didn't even know they were related so that's like Divine Providence or something you
45Know and then they start yelling at you about Mission and left face right face and all this garbage and next thing you know I'm in Tahiti because King's Point sent you to Sea for a whole year and U so I I traveled you know for one year I'm on a boat at Sea traveling the world navigating doing all this stuff and this one one tanker oil tanker stand oil tanker I catch goes into papetti Harbor in toiti and I went out with Miss Tahiti and we and we parted like a rock star all night for three nights so my came true yeah my dream came true and then then the most biggest mistake she made was she wanted to get married so
34I couldn't go back could have told your guidance counselor that hey my dreams came true you know I'm out of here but that's but that's why and that's what I came back from serving for when I graduated in ' 69 I didn't want to sail anymore and then I had a I had a English teacher who was a West Point graduate was a B17 pilot Army airor and he got shot down twice so while I was at King's Point he had his meet had us read The Communist Manifesto instead of Little Women and you had us read dos Capal by Hitler and Miles little book and Stalin's were so I was well versed into Marxism
25And so I got this high paying job in 69 with standard oil on tank and I'm about see going you know geta I'm making all this money what am I doing with my life so back I graduates of Kings quite in 1969 making 120,000 a year that's a lot of money back then yeah today it's starting pay most guys you know but it was a lot of money back then and I gave it all up and I went back to Kings Point to the academy and I in New York and I sat down with my in instructor the B7 West Point graduate and he talked to me about life do you know what I mean he says life is not just about the money yeah and his life is his adventure
14And with that and the the 67 war was just on and the Israelis kicked ass on the Egyptians and they were flying the 104 starf fighter you know said gez that looks good so I'm talking to the B7 England pilot I mean the English English teacher B7 West Point graduate he goes he looks at me gives it that look and he says don't sell your life for money you know career and money yeah so being not the brightest guy in my class I joined the Marine Corps I went to Vietnam n
